Heritage
DAY
1: We depart the U.S. today for our flight
to Glasgow, Scotland via Continental Airlines.
DAY 2: We arrive at the Glasgow
this morning. Upon arrival we will be met by our
guide and driver who will drive us via deluxe
motorcoach to our hotel in Edinburgh, just a short
jaunt. After check-in formalities and a few moments
to freshen up, we will see some of the city of
Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. We tour
Edinburgh Castle, a building that has played a
decisive role in Scotland's military and royal
history. From the fortress's vantage point on
top of Castle Rock, one can enjoy some wonderful
views of the city and the countryside beyond.
We will take a walk along the Royal Mile and visit
the John Knox House. Dinner at our hotel.
DAY 3: This morning we will
visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse, a site associated
with Mary Queen of Scots and still used as a summer
home of the Queen. We will then see sites associated
with the ministry of John Wesley and others. The
remainder of the day is free, a chance to shop
and sightsee on our own around Edinburgh. Scotland
is famous for its woolen products. At one of the
shops, check to see if you have a family crest
and tartan. Very interesting...one might be surprised.
Dinner tonight is on our own.
DAY 4: Leaving Edinburgh behind
today, we head for Stratford-Upon-Avon. On the
way, we stop at the imposing Warwick Castle. A
thousand years of history are on display inside
the fortress itself, from the recreation of a
medieval household to the more sedate charms of
a Victorian Royal weekend party. Outside we can
stroll through the elegant landscaped grounds
on the banks of the River Avon. We continue to
Stratford-Upon-Avon, the home of William Shakespeare.
Dinner at our hotel.
DAY 5: This morning we tour
some of the sites associated with Shakespeare,
including Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Mary Arden's
House and Shakespeare's birthplace. The afternoon
is free for us to enjoy exploring the area on
our own, shopping or just resting. The River Avon
is beautiful and there are many parks in the area.
Dinner on our own.
DAY 6: We depart Stratford this
morning enroute to London. On our way we stop
at Blenheim Palace, a magnificent residence and
the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. We then
travel to the University City of Oxford. A walking
tour will acquaint us with some of the city's
many colleges. This is truly a unique city to
be thoroughly enjoyed. We journey on to London
for dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 7: A panoramic tour of London
this morning will introduce us to some of the
city's best-known buildings and landmarks. Our
guide will point out the many different areas
that make up central London: the City, home of
finance and commerce; the centres of government
in and around Whitehall; Buckingham Palace and
the Mall, the Royal procession route; Covent Garden
and the theatre district; plus the many famous
houses, museums, galleries, shops and restaurants
that fill London with bustle and excitement. The
afternoon is free. There is an optional tour to
Hampton Court Palace, Henry VIII's magnificent
home on the banks of the River Thames. Within
this vast palace one will see the great Tudor
kitchens, the elegant state apartments, paintings,
tapestries, sculpture and carvings; outside do
not miss the ornamental gardens, the Great Vine
and the maze. Dinner tonight is independent, giving
us a great opportunity to try the food at one
of the many restaurants in the vicinity.
DAY 8: Day trip to Cambridge.
We will have a walking tour of the town and colleges
of Cambridge, one of the most beautiful of British
cities. Then we will travel to Bedford to see
the church where John Bunyan preached and the
adjoining museum. We will stop in the tiny village
of Olney to visit the church where John Newton
ministered and where he wrote Amazing Grace. We
then return to London where we will have a farewell
dinner tonight at a quaint local restaurant.
DAY 9: Free Day - Dinner on
Our Own.
DAY 10: The coach will take
us to the London airport in time for our flight
back to the States.
